Target Medicine: Become

Become is a one-day event for Year 9 and 10 students of African-Caribbean descent or Mixed Black backgrounds to explore what it might be like going to university and studying medicine.

The idea of this event was developed by four UCL Medical Students from Black African and Black Caribbean backgrounds who want to change the low representation of students from similar backgrounds within the field of medicine.

A number of students from St Mark’s have been successful applicants in 2019.

Kings College School partnership - Senior Aspirations

The Senior Aspirations Project is a whole school project in collaboration with King’s College School, Wimbledon. This project offers a variety of enrichment opportunities and events available for all year groups throughout the year.

This includes the Future Foundations Event for our Year 11 students, an event which invokes thought into planning for their future university and career prospects and develops leadership qualities. Rheece Drakes said of his experience, “I came here to discover what I am truly passionate about and to hopefully execute this in my career choices.”

IntheINdustry:

‘IntheINdustry’ is a series of virtual workshops and Q&As with young professionals from the industries that our High Attainers are interested in. These sessions allow our students to see and be inspired by established professionals.

The Scholars Programme

The Brilliant Club’s Scholars Programme gives pupils from non-selective state schools the opportunity to work with a PhD researcher to experience university style learning. This helps our High Attainers to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to secure a place at a highly- selective university.

This is a programme that our Year 10 students undertake and this year, our students are carrying out a research project into ‘Cracking the Genetic Code: Understanding Bioinformatics’.

New Views Playwrighting Programme

New Views is a competition in which students write their own one-act plays which are submitted to a panel of judges at the National Theatre. Out of the hundreds of students who enter, one script is chosen for performance at the National Theatre with professional cast and crew. The students benefit from weekly workshops and interaction with a professional playwright, and experience an extensive creative writing and redrafting process. This programme is open to our Year 10 students.

Target Oxbridge

Target Oxbridge is a programme that aims to give Black African and Caribbean students and students of mixed race with Black African and Caribbean heritage the opportunity to gain an early insight into life at Cambridge and how to secure a Cambridge place.

Students will be invited to attend four monthly webinars between April and July. These webinars will provide the chance to hear from current Black students at Cambridge and to ask questions about their experiences. The webinars will also provide advice and insights into how degree subject choice impacts career options, as well as the chance to take part in a mini lecture run by a Cambridge academic.
